Aim of the course

The course introduction to statistics provides insight into the fundamentals of statistical theory and analysis. It covers methods for describing data (descriptive statistics) and for generalising results from samples to the population (inferential statistics). Participants learn to identify appropriate data for analyses and sources of error, as well as to choose the correct data analysis methods. Statistical formulas are explained and applied; however, the main focus is on a general understanding of the process rather than on conducting complex calculations by hand. The instructor explains complex material comprehensibly and with an eye on real-life concerns. The course also offers the possibility to discuss own research problems with the instructor.
